ODM vs OEM for AI hardware
The acronyms are simple. The wrong engagement still burns a year when models, thermal, and plastic change together.
ODM (original design manufacturing) means Hardware Form co-develops architecture, electronics, mechanics, firmware, and production for your AI product. OEM manufacturing means you supply a frozen design and we execute PCBA, assembly, test, and ramp. Most AI hardware startups start ODM through EVT, then shift toward OEM on stable SKUs.
Quick comparison
| ODM | OEM | |
|---|---|---|
| You bring | Problem, constraints, model goals | BOM, drawings, test limits |
| We own | Architecture, DFM, factory intro | Yield, line setup, quality systems |
| Best when | Physical AI still moving | Design locked, need volume |
| Risk if mis-picked | Slower if you already have a perfect BOM | Expensive if thermal or RF still wrong |

ODM vs OEM FAQ
Can we switch from ODM to OEM mid-program?
Yes, often after DVT when BOM and test are frozen. We plan document handoff so OEM ramp does not lose traceability.
What about JDM?
JDM is a deeper partnership when you want shared investment in tooling and capacity. It is separate from the ODM/OEM choice.
